¡°I am a Care Helper at Home¡± Family Practices in Caregiving Experiences of Family Care Helpers
Yoon Tae-Young

Abstract
This study aims to analyze the experiences of family care helpers in the context of ¡®family practices¡¯ (Morgan, 2011). Long-term care insurance (LTCI) for senior citizens does not provide a separate compensation program for family recipients but instead for family care helpers (FCHs). These FCHs have obtained a care helper certificate and are paid for taking care of family members who are graded as care recipients of the LTCI. In this process, an FCH is placed in between users and service providers under the LTCI. In these circumstances, it is necessary to analyze how caregivers interpret their own experiences of caregiving for their old family members. This study adopts concepts of 'family practices' as an analytical framework (Morgan, 2011). Paired with the analytical framework, this study applies qualitative, empirical methods, specifically, problem-centered interviews (PCIs) with 18 FCHs. These interviews are interpreted by using 'inductive thematic analysis' (Kim, 2016).
The FCHs interpreted their caregiving as a kind of family practice. The interviews revealed five significant themes for care experiences, including 'home as a location of dual activities', 'family as a social relationship', ¡®qualification as a requirement for compensations¡¯, and ¡®meanings of a compensations for the family care helpers¡¯. This study suggests the need to preserve the caregiving characteristics of FCHs, the need to support them through the rationality of compensation, and the realization of compensation level on policy implications.
